Maersk reduces fuel consumption and emissions through its Global Voyage Centre

Last year, Maersk Line owned and chartered fleet comprising 550 vessels completed about 37004 voyages called 33000 ports using 380 terminals in 117 countries. Given the sheer scope of Maersk Line’s operations, the Company is committed to reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This puts energy efficiency as one of the crucial objectives. That means taking careful steps towards optimizing these 37004 voyages in terms of energy efficiency. Wondering how do they go about ensuring the successful implementation of this endeavour? That’s where Maersk Line’s Global Voyage Centre (GVC) comes into the picture. The Global Voyage Centre hosts a giant screen that, monitors in real-time,  the position of all the Maersk Line owned and chartered vessels.  A team of senior seafarers monitors these vessels 24×7 and provides support to improve their energy performance and facilitate best practice sharing. “The Global Voyage Centre was setup as a project in July 2013 by selecting a few Captains and Senior Navigating Officers from the fleet join the team with an objective to bridge the communication gap between the shore staff and the fleet as well as monitor the vessels on long ocean passages on a real time basis. The GVC has since evolved to take on ...

Energy storage manufacturer joins Renewable Energy Innovation Project

Eco Marine Power (EMP) announced that The Furukawa Battery, has joined the Blue Star Delos Renewable Energy Innovation Project and has supplied batteries for use onboard the ship Blue Star Delos. The ongoing Blue Star Delos Renewable Energy Innovation Project will evaluate in stages, a number of innovative solutions developed by Eco Marine Power (EMP) and its strategic partners onboard the Blue Star Delos - a modern high speed passenger and car ferry owned and operated by the multi-award winning Greek shipping company - Blue Star Ferries of Athens, Greece - a member of Attica Group. The batteries from Furukawa Battery will be used as part of the energy storage solution for the trial and will be connected to a marine solar panel array and the Aquarius Management & Automation System (MAS) jointly developed by KEI System Ltd. and EMP. The batteries will also be connected to a load and their performance monitored using the Aquarius MAS. Prior to selection for the trial the battery pack was subjected to vibration tests plus samples were tested at the Aquarius Innovation Lab in Osaka, Japan. The battery pack to be used for the trial is comprised of twelve (12) Valve Regulated Lead-Acid ...

Construction of five eco- vessels begins at NASSCO

General Dynamics NASSCO and City of San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer today signaled the start of construction of five American Petroleum Tankers at a steel cutting ceremony for the first tanker, the APT-1, at the NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. Joined by General Dynamics NASSCO executive leadership and Mayor Faulconer were representatives from Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P., and Rob Kurz, vice president of Kinder Morgan Terminals and president of KMP subsidiary American Petroleum Tankers. "Today's start of construction ceremony signifies our ongoing relationship with American Petroleum Tankers. NASSCO is pleased to continue our commitment as good environmental stewards by building the most energy-efficient tankers in the Jones Act fleet and in helping to sustain and grow highly-skilled jobs right here in San Diego," said Kevin Graney, vice president and general manager of General Dynamics NASSCO. The APT-1 is the first tanker of a five-tanker contract between General Dynamics NASSCO and American Petroleum Tankers (APT), which calls for the design and construction of five 50,000 deadweight ton, LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity. The 610-foot-long tankers are a new "ECO" design, offering improved fuel efficiency, and include the latest environmental protection features, including a Ballast Water Treatment ...

Next generation bulk carrier design developed

Ecoships, the technical shipmanagement arm of Newport Shipping Group, has introduced a next generation bulk carrier design, developed to set the standard in ecologically compatible marine transportation. Inspired by the low friction to water flow and self-cleaning properties of the lotus flower - a symbol of purity and beauty in Buddhist and Hindu philosophy - Ecoships' Greenlotus 32, is a 32,500dwt geared, wide hatched, handy-size bulker, designed to meet existing and future CO2 (carbon dioxide) NOx (oxides of nitrogen) and SOx (oxides of sulphur) emissions regulations. Captain Aykut Yilmaz, Newport Shipping's General Manager, said: "The Greenlotus 32 is a proven eco-friendly bulk carrier that builds on the success of two earlier designs delivered in 2011. From cost and energy efficiency perspectives, it makes a lot of sense for shipowners to reconsider their ageing Handies in favour of the Greenlotus 32. The return on investment is very attractive due to its extremely low fuel consumption and it meets the most stringent emissions reduction requirements." The 170.90m long, 27m wide hull form, optimised for energy efficient operation using computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis, has a propulsion arrangement based around a de-rated, Tier III compliant MAN B&W SG50ME-B9 two-stroke main engine ...

Maritime NZ reviews Oil Spill Response Strategy

Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) is inviting comment on its draft updated New Zealand Marine Oil Spill Response Strategy. The draft strategy is based on the current version but substantially updated to include lessons learned nationally and internationally in recent years, and follows discussion with regional councils, iwi, and community stakeholders at a series of public meetings held earlier this year. Under the Maritime Transport Act, MNZ is required to regularly update the strategy, last revised in 2006. The draft Strategy not only provides information about how Maritime NZ responds to marine oil spills, but for the first time, sets out the vision, principles, goals, and objectives for the next five years for New Zealand's marine oil spill readiness and response. When finalised the Strategy will provide a framework within which New Zealand's approach to managing marine oil spills can continue to develop. The draft strategy identifies four key goals New Zealand is able to respond to a significant marine oil spill New Zealand's readiness and response is evidence-based, intelligence-led and meets international best practice MNZ builds and develops relationships that will improve readiness and response Industry and regional readiness and response capability is matched to the scale of their responsibility ...
