He briefly explained the e-navigation concept; it includes the harmonized collection, integration, exchange, presentation and analysis of marine information on board and ashore by electronic means, therefore, ECDIS & Digital Products have major role.

Variations in the way different manufacturers display navigation systems have been a cause for concern for several years, prompting calls for a default setting across all models. The Nautical Institute strongly supports the introduction of a Standard, or S-Mode, setting on all systems.

DNV GL awarded a type approval certificate with EU Wheelmark for Danelec Marine two ECDIS models. The type approval signifies that the products meet all applicable technical requirements, including the new performance standards.

Passage planning is key, and CHIRP gives advice guidance for seafarers using ECDIS, following a report by the UKHO that ECDIS issues are on the rise. There are over 30 ECDIS manufacturers, so seafarers need to be familiar with their own system, and make sure that the system is up to date and corrections have been carried out. Non-compliance leads to detention, and threatens the safety of the crew, the ship and the marine environment.
