DP World calls for long term solution to maritime piracy

Maritime-piracy symposium , Dubai , June 27-28 Viewing piracy as a matter of grave international concern, the UAE called for a comprehensive, inclusive approach that can deliver a long term, sustainable solution to the problem.'Piracy's destabilizing impact can only be mitigated through collaboration across political, military, financial and legal arenas. DP World Completes First Phase of Al Hamriya Port Development Plan

Upgrading the port to meet customers and fishermen's growing needs DP World, UAE Region on June 12 announced the completion of the first phase of the Al Hamriya port development plans aimed at modernising and upgrading the port to meet customers and fishermen's growing needs.The first phase officially opened today includes the upgrading of 1 million square feet of yard, which has been paved, metal fenced, and gated. These open yards are now available for lease for traders and logistics companies.Details of the next phase of the project were unveiled by Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, Ghanem Al Abbar, Deputy Director, Al Hamriya Port, at a media roundtable today.The second phase includes a modern facility for the exclusive use of the fishing industry at the port. Construction work has already begun on the facility and is due to be completed this year. DP World increases Melbourne port s logistics potential

New energy-efficient straddle carriers to improve efficiency and productivity DP World Melbourne has introduced the first eight of 16 new energy-efficient straddle carriers, the Dubai-based port handlers announced.The new equipment with its greater capacity to handle containers will also help reduce DP World's environmental footprint as well as improve efficiency and productivity at Australia's largest container port.A second batch of eight straddle carriers is due to be delivered later this year, increasing DP World Melbourne's fleet to 22 straddle carriers. DP World Aden rolls out a big welcome for 300m long vessel on maiden visit

The largest PIL container ship to ever berth at Aden Aden Container Terminal (ACT), operated by global marine terminal operator DP World, has received and serviced one of the largest container vessels to call at the historic Yemeni port, the Kota Carum, owned by Singapore-based Pacific International Lines.The 300-metre long, 6,606 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent container unit) ship, built in 2011, is the largest PIL container ship to ever berth at Aden.The management of DP World Aden rolled out a well-practised drill of discharging and loading containers with its highly skilled workforce and state-of-the-art quayside handling technology to deliver premium turnaround time to the customer. DP World’s ADEN Container Terminal Handles Its Biggest Ship Ever

332-metre long MSC Tomoko Aden Container Terminal (ACT), operated by global marine terminal operator DP World, has received and serviced the 8,441 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) MSC Tomoko, the largest container vessel ever to call at the facility, located in Yemen's premier port city.DP World Aden management mobilised a meticulous plan to welcome the Mediterranean Shipping Company's 332-metre long mega ship, which has a draft of 14.7 metres, discharging and loading containers with its highly-trained workforce and sophisticated terminal handling technology to ensure a quick turnaround time. MSC Tomoko was berthed for a total of 14 hours and 30 minutes.While MSC's container ships are frequent guests at Aden, this is the largest vessel to visit since the terminal opened in 1999.Capt. Accreditation services covering training in DP, Oil Spill Response, BWM, ECDIS The Nautical Institute announced that it is to expand its accreditation services. Members input, which has fed into the Institute's current five year strategic plan, highlights that focus on competency and professionalism across the entire maritime industry is greater than ever.Under previous strategic plans, the Institute has developed model courses for leadership and management training, raised awareness within the industry of the need for this training, and accredited training providers for these important courses.The Institute continues to build upon their international standard for training and certification of dynamic positioning operators, established in 1983, as well as accrediting the extensive network of international DP training centres. These subjects are now included as a mandatory requirement in the STCW Code, following the 2010 Manila Amendments.The issue of competency in the modern era is consistently raised by members in terms of the effectiveness of training, reduction of sea time and experience, assessment and use of simulation.
