Oil spill incidents seem to occur more nowadays. Thinking of major oil spills, there were three major ones that took place in the US, starting from Santa Barbara in 1969, Exxon Valden in 1989 and Deepwater Horizon in 2010.

US maritime officials decided to suspend the review of Trafigura's application for a Gulf Coast deepwater terminal, as they are waiting for additional information, a US Coast Guard official informed on March 15. The suspension will lead to at least a month delay in Trafigura’s plans. For its side, Trafigura downplayed the significance of the suspension.

BP announced that it has discovered two new oilfields in the Gulf of Mexico and has found one billion barrels of oil at an existing field with the help of a new seismic technology. The company, years after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Spill, announced its plans on expanding its production at its Atlantis oilfield in the Gulf of Mexico.

Trafigura has applied to build a deep water port in Texas, US. The port will be able to load supertankers, supplying the very much needed oil export infrastructure to the country. The port will enable VLCCs to load cargo via a single-point mooring buoy system and will have a capacity of about 500,000 barrels per day.
