Women seafarers make up just 2% of the crewing workforce and are predominately found in the cruise sector, while in ship-owning companies, they make up 34% of the workforce. Women may be less but that doesn’t mean they should be less-than. As the maritime industry strives to be more diverse and inclusive, women should not be left out, a panel during the 2023 Crew Welfare Week highlighted.

To ensure good seafarer health onboard starts from the top. The concept of leadership bears the responsibility and shapes the work culture, ultimately having a major impact on seafarer health, concluded experts in a panel discussion during 2023 Crew Welfare Week.

The SAFETY4SEA Crew Welfare Week took place 20-22 June 2023, where various presentations and panel discussions explored issued surrounding crew welfare. Mental health and welfare were also discussed as it is a crucial aspect of a person's wellbeing. 

During a discussion on the first day of the 2023 Crew Welfare Week, panelists focused on the challenges related to seafarers’ welfare and wellbeing and highlighted that ship managers and operators need to keep promoting efforts targeting both the physical and the mental health of crew onboard.

As efforts to decarbonize and digitalize the industry expand, seafarers and onshore personnel are expected to keep up with the rapidly evolving developments by improving their skills, panelists agreed during a dedicated panel on soft skills at 2023 Crew Welfare Week.
