US-based trade giant Cargill announced the launch of 'CO2 Challenge' which aims to find and scale new technologies capable of reducing a ship’s gross CO2 emissions by 10%. The initiative, focused on decarbonizing the shipping sector, is being launched in partnership with DNV GL.

Cargill plans to reduce shipping emissions 15% by 2020, in an attempt to comply with new regulations which mandate the reduction of pollution. For this reason, the company demanded from some of its food manufacturer customers to conduct more environmentally-friendly operations.

The efficiency ratings system - containing efficiency information on over 60,000 vessels including container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, cargo ships - enables charterers to instantly see a ship's theoretical greenhouse gas emissions and relative energy efficiency as determined by RightShip's EVDI rated from A (most efficient) ...

The kite will use wind power to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs Cargill has signed an agreement with Greek ship owner/manager Anbros Maritime S.A. (Anbros) to install the world's largest kite on its Aghia Marina dry bulk cargo vessel. The Aghia Marina typically transports cargoes of agricultural and industrial raw materials.The 170 metre long carrier, built in 1994, has a service speed of up to 14 knots and can carry about 28,500 tonnes of dry bulk cargoes at any one time, making it the largest vessel to use the wind power technology created by SkySails GmbH (SkySails).Last February, Cargill announced it had signed a supply agreement with SkySails that aims to use wind power technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry.
