Commenting on the recently proposed revision of the European Renewable Energy Directive by the EU Commission, the Port of Rotterdam noted that the REDII should provide the right incentives so that companies and governments can effectively make the transition towards a sustainable, energy-efficient and biobased economy.

Heineken, Nedcargo and GoodFuels announced the launch of a joint pilot initiative, aiming to demonstrate the advantages of operating inland transport barges, using sustainable drop-in marine fuel. Under the project, the 104 TEU inland barge ‘For Ever’ will transport Heineken beer from Zoeterwoude to Rotterdam, fueled with 30% biofuel.

A new initiative will hand cargo owners the opportunity to control and reduce the carbon footprint of their ocean freight, from the industry itself, and not from alternative mitigation schemes. The ‘GoodShipping Program’ is designed accelerate to low-carbon fuels in the marine fuel mix by driving ‘purchasing’ biofuel.

The Port of Rotterdam says that an increase of 4.8 million tonnes in the throughput of biofuels has been noticed over the last year, which is over 6% compared to 2015.

HES International is developing a tank terminal for the storage and transhipment of petroleum products and biofuels, at Maasvlakte 1. BP adds plans for pipeline connections between the refinery and the terminal. The HES Tank Terminal will be an independent storage terminal, where operators can store and tranship liquid products.

Port of Amsterdam actively supports the development of marine biofuels. Thus, GoodFuels Marine has won Port of Amsterdam’s tender for its fleet of five patrol vessels, which will now run on fuel containing 30% exceptionally high-quality biodiesel.

Neste announced that has started the ex-pipe delivery of low-sulphur marine fuel at the Södertälje terminal in Sweden. The service will first be used by Astral, a tanker operated by Sirius Chartering. These fuels offer a good solution to reduce sulfur emissions and to fulfill EU and national tight regulations.

MOL announced the completion, on February 10, of this year's Project Based Learning program at the University of Tokyo. MOL provided the theme "Application of bio fuels for diesel engines on ocean shipping vessels" and support throughout the process of defining and solving tasks in research conducted by the students.
