With respect to the IMO's recently adopted goal for 2050, which eyes a 70% efficiency improvement and a total 50% CO2 cuts by 2050, ICS Deputy Secretary General, Simon Bennett, noted that these targets can realistically only be achieved with the development and global roll out of genuine zero CO2 fuels.

The US Department of Energy announced up to $3 million in funding for advanced biofuels, bioenergy and biobased products, under its Biomass Research and Development Initiative co-organized with the DoA. Two projects from the University of Tennessee and Northwestern University were selected to receive $1 to $2 million each.

US imports of biomass-based diesel, including biodiesel and renewable diesel, totaled 14.1 million barrels in 2017, a 36% decrease from 2016. Despite the fact that increasing Renewable Fuel Standard targets have increased biomass-based diesel demand in recent years, imports fell in 2017 because of US import duties on foreign biodiesel volumes.

Shell released its Sustainability report for 2017, addressing matters regarding the transition to a low-carbon energy future and measures to tackle climate change, while also improving the economic and social benefits of energy. Shell noted that it supports the Paris Agreement, as it "achieved a landmark agreement to tackle climate change".

Biofuels from GoodFuels Marine are now available at the port of Rotterdam, and will be available along inland shipping routes in the Netherlands through the Reinplus Fiwado Bunker bunker network as well, which supplies fuel to inland vessels throughout North West Europe. These fuels aim to save up to 90% CO2 and 100% sulphur compared to fossil fuels.

Researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution are working to power homes and vehicles with fuel made from seaweed grown at large-scale offshore farms. The project will be funded by the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy.

A2B-online Container, GoodFuels Marine and We4Sea announced the launch of a cooperation program aimed at reducing fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from two vessels of A2B online container. The cost savings will then be used to use advanced biofuels, to further reduce emissions.
