The UK MCA issued an updated marine guidance note on alcohol limits for seafarers onboard UK vessels worldwide and for vessels operating in UK waters, under STCW. The new limit for blood is 0.05% or 50 milligram in 100 milliliters and the new limit for breath is 0.25 milligrams per liter of 25 micrograms in 100 milliliters.

Maritime New Zealand informed that the Marlborough District Council’s prosecuted two intoxicated boaties, after the 13-metre launch 'Carpe Diem' ran aground on Mabel Island near Picton, on 4 April 2017. The two men, both of Christchurch, were fined a total of $5,625 and ordered to pay more than $1,000 costs by the Court on 1st of May. 

Danish authorities detained the Portugal-flagged general cargo ship 'Rix Partner' and arrested its Captain, after he was found affected by alcohol. The ship was stopped in the Great Belt Strait off Denmark, at the late night of April 17th, following communication problems between the navy and the Russian Captain.

The 2016 Annual Report of the Irish MCIB highlighted alcohol and drug consumption continue to be factors in marine incidents. As such, Ireland's Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport issued a notice to remind of the law in relation to alcohol and drugs when operating or while onboard vessels within Irish waters.

On 1st of December, the water policy in Kiel, Germany, reported that it caught the captain of a Maltese-flagged ocean-going vessel, under the influence of alcohol, as the breathalyzer test showed a 3.29 % alcohol concentration.

On 5 October 2016, a Port of London Authority sea pilot was in the process of boarding the Bahamas registered general cargo vessel 'Sunmi' from the pilot launch 'Patrol' when he fell and got crushed between the two vessels. The UK MAIB issued an investigation report on the accident.
