JRCS, a Japanese maritime services company, and Microsoft launched an ambitious plan to digitally transform the global shipping industry. JRCS will use Mixed Reality, the Internet of Things, and AI to train shipping crews, maintain ships, and improve navigational safety standards.

A new industry project in UK is set to explore the technical, regulatory and societal issues of using autonomous surface vessels, integrated with existing manned shipping operations, to support offshore wind farm operations and maintenance, as well as to develop a timeline for the phased introduction of autonomous vessels.

UK-based University of Aberdeen, WFS Technologies, and OGIC launched a joint technology project to design and construct the world’s first ExtremeEdge OLM (On-line Monitoring) system for offshore subsea and platform structures. The cooperation seeks to deliver the first generation of real time fatigue monitoring system driven by AI.

Aberdeen’s Oil & Gas Innovation Centre has invested £300,000 in three new projects, which aim to improve efficiency and reduce costs in the oil and gas industry. The projects include an Intelligent Hydrate Tool, a new remote monitoring and analytics system and a flow control device to identify changes in fluids.

Maersk will cooperate with Boston-based Sea Machines Robotics to try a situational awareness technology onboard one of Maersk’s new-build Winter Palace ice-class containerships. The technology uses artificial intelligence to improve at-sea situational awareness, object identification and tracking capabilities.

French oil major Total and Google Cloud signed an agreement to jointly develop artificial intelligence solutions applied to subsurface data analysis for oil and gas exploration and production. The agreement focuses on the development of AI programs that will make it possible to interpret subsurface images.

MSRA, Microsoft’s research arm, and Hong Kong-based shipping company OOCL announced partnership in applying Artificial Intelligence research to improve network operations and achieve efficiencies in shipping. The collaboration is expected to nurture over 200 AI developers over the next 12 months.

Fujitsu, Singapore Management University, and A*STAR's Institute of High Performance Computing, will collaborate to develop new technologies to improve vessel traffic management in the Port of Singapore, with the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. These technologies will use AI and big data analytics.
