Shipowners believe that ammonia and hydrogen are the most attractive fuel options for the long term, according to an ABS survey.
ABS recently announced that granted an Approval in Principle (AIP) to Kawasaki Heavy Industries regarding its LPG as fuel system design. Specifically, KHI highlights that its dual-fuel engine is capable of using both marine diesel oil and LPG as fuel, while reduces fuel consumption, following the NOx Tier 3 regulations.
AND will provide compliance and safety considerations to the development of designs for a low-emission feeder container vessel by MAN Energy Solutions (MAN) and the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI).
ABS issued guidance specifying their requirements for obtaining the class notation “LNG Cargo Ready”, to be applied to liquefied gas carriers as Ethane or Ethylene carriers, that have been designed and constructed for possible future carriage of LNG cargo.
ABS launched a guide providing recommendations and guidance to all interested parties about fuel cell systems in the marine and offshore industries for the design, evaluation, and construction of support systems for use of fuel cells on ships and may be applied to all types of vessels, as well as their benefits, such as increased efficiency, low to zero emissions and also reduced noise levels.
During ABS’ event in Athens, representatives from the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Chevron Shipping Company and Clarkson Research Services, gathered to discuss the role technology plays in the shipping industry and the path to IMO 2050.
Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman, President and CEO, discussed the importance of the US to keep on shaping the future of global maritime energy, safety and sustainability. He highlighted that IMO’s challenges for 2030 and 2050 are pushing the industry to new solutions around fuel and operations that are not only environmentally responsible, but also commercially viable, technically feasible and safe.
ABS signed an MOU with the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI) to create a new facility for improving the safety of LNG as fuel. It aspires to enable shipowners to test fuel gas and bunkering systems, under actual loading conditions, before installation onboard.
With the growing relevance of LNG as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, Sembcorp Marine, ABS, and A*STAR’s IHPC announced a collaboration to develop new technologies and capabilities in offshore, marine and energy sectors that will advance the adoption of LNG as a preferred fuel.
FueLNG selected ABS to class Singapore’s first LNG bunker barge. The vessel is scheduled to begin construction in January 2019. The LNG bunker barge, with 7,500 cubic meters of LNG capacity, will be owned and operated by FueLNG, a joint venture between Shell and Keppel Offshore & Marine.
