The port of Durban, South Africa’s largest port, has been hit by the worst torrential rain experienced in more than 6 decades.
The port of Durban is a vital conduit for landlocked neighbors, such as Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Some parts of KwaZulu-Natal province recorded heavy downpour earlier this week. Many deaths and severe damage to road and rail links has been reported.
Maersk stated that depot and warehouse operations have been suspended, since the damage is making access impossible to access the Durban terminal. Similarly, Transnet, the state-owned ports and rail operator, suspended shipping in Durban.
Shipping has been suspended until further notice as a result of environmental damage caused by the adverse weather, and vessels on berth are on standby
…Transnet spokeswoman Ayanda Shezi said in a statement.
Key routes into the port were closed because of flood damage. The army is preparing to provide assistance while the President Cyril Ramaphosa is visiting Durban today.

Please don’t place that 100 days restriction on yourself, Durban harbour is decimated & the Chinese are on lockdown, small things that might be necessary to eradicate bucket system might not be available. Don’t sabotage self, be realistic. pic.twitter.com/lvBc3dMkwH

A video showing looting that started at a warehouse in KZN. This can really snowball if not stopped immediately. Where is SAPS? It also seems municipal disaster management plans aren't in place? #KZNFloods #Durban #KZNFlooding pic.twitter.com/GLKAxPYhT1
