Shanghai Port became the first in the world to reach the annual container throughput to 50 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) on 22 December.
The port has ranked first globally for 14 consecutive years in terms of annual container throughput. According to Yang Yanbin, deputy general manager of the production and business department of the Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd, the growth in container traffic at Shanghai Port is due to more export containers, as well as an increase in international and ship-to-ship transfers.
Moreover, Yang mentioned that ship-to-ship transfers are expected to make up 60% of the port’s activity in 2024, highlighting its growing role as a global hub.
Currently, Shanghai Port has nearly 350 international routes connecting to over 700 ports in more than 200 countries and regions, reflecting the city’s broader development.
