Crisis responders from Sailors’ Society are currently seeking financial support for their efforts in assisting seafarers affected by the Red Sea conflict.
In January, the Society initiated a crisis appeal, shedding light on the hidden costs of the crisis, particularly addressing the challenges faced by seafarers navigating the Red Sea and those redirected around the Horn of Africa.
Boet Van Schalkwyk, part of the global team of highly trained responders involved in the Ship Connect program, emphasized the stress and anxiety experienced by seafarers. He shared a recent interaction with a crew exiting the Bab al Mandeb Strait, highlighting their concerns about the uncertain future.
It’s the stress of not knowing that has really pushed up anxiety levels and affected everybody on the vessel. They have this picture in their mind of what could be and unfortunately to remove that is very difficult because it’s real, it could happen
… said Boet Van Schalkwyk
Seafarers in the Red Sea are currently grappling with the fear of Houthi explosive drones and missiles, while alternative routes around the Horn of Africa pose threats such as tropical cyclones and piracy attacks.
Boet underscored the urgency of supporting Sailors’ Society’s appeal, emphasizing the crucial work the organization is undertaking to assist seafarers in real-time incidents. He encouraged people to contribute, emphasizing the organization’s continuous availability and support for seafarers and their families facing various traumas around the clock.
