RINA has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to SDARI for their innovative Aframax tanker design, part of a joint project involving TMS Tankers as the future owner and Wartsila as the engine manufacturer.
The key feature of the design is its novel propulsion system, which replaces the conventional setup with two medium-speed engines capable of powering both propulsion and onboard systems. According to RINA, this configuration enhances redundancy, improves safety by eliminating blackout risks, and delivers superior fuel efficiency across various speeds compared to existing dual-fuel vessels.
Depending on market conditions, owners can choose to retrofit the engines for future fuels or convert from natural gas to hydrogen, contributing to carbon capture efforts.
This milestone was celebrated at Posidonia 2024, highlighting the collaborative efforts of all partners involved and marking a significant step towards realizing a sustainable and efficient next-generation tanker.
