Belgium’s Port of Antwerp finished 2018 with development in all segments, establishing the sixth consecutive yearly record as it reported a growth of 5.2% compared to 2017. The figures for 2018 present that the port’s total transshipment reached 235.2 million tonnes, a new record, with growth in all cargo types.
Specifically, the container traffic continued to develop, as it experienced an increase of 6.4% to 130.9 million tonnes, or 11.1 million TEU, with a 6.2% rise.
In addition, the port’s Authority stated that only supplies from the Middle East and Latin America showed a slight decrease over the last year.
Breakbulk transhipment saw a slight increase with a growth of 1%.
The RoRo cargo grew by 5.4% to 5.3 million tonnes, while the number of shipped passenger cars increased by 4.7% to just under 1.3 million.
Liquid bulk transshipment increased by 3.6% to 75.8 million tonnes, while dry bulk grew by 7.2% to 13 million tonnes.
Concluding, the number of seagoing vessels sailing to Antwerp rose by 2.6% to 14,595.
