Suritec Report
Suritec has issued a report including detailed analysis of piracy incidents, armed robbery of ships and maritime terrorism for the month of October 2013.
During last month, Several attacks were reported in East Africa and the High Risk Zone in October 2013. None resulted in a hijacking. The Combined Forces arrested a group of pirates that was responsible for two of these attacks. The Iranian Navy reported that they foiled four attacks.
Attacks in West and Central Africa were down in October compared to previous months. Attacks seem to be localised off Brass and Port Harcourt. Two kidnappings were reported. Of the four reported attacks three were aimed at Nigerians. No hijackings were reported. Overall incidents in 2013 still show an increase over previous years.
The hijacking of the Danai 4 in Malaysian waters does not conform to regular attacks in this area. It also seems that the Thai International Tankers Group is being specifically targeted, with three attacks on tankers managed by the company in the last three months. Several violent incidents against local fishermen occurred in Bangladesh in October 2013. Attacks and kidnapping for ransom of local fishermen is an on-going occurrence. Robbery of commercial vessels in anchorages takes place regularly.
