On October 7, Hong Kong’s International Maritime Centre (IMC) announced the creation of the Hong Kong Chamber of Shipping (HKCoS).
The launch ceremony, attended by prominent figures from the maritime industry in both Hong Kong and Mainland China, introduced a new body aimed at fostering collaboration between Hong Kong’s IMC and various Mainland maritime businesses, government entities, and educational institutions. The Chamber’s mission is to enhance Hong Kong’s role in the shipping, finance, and trading sectors, while supporting the development of a national maritime hub.
At the event, Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and a founding member and advisor of the Chamber, emphasized that Hong Kong’s shipping industry benefits from the “one country, two systems” framework, which provides a unique competitive advantage.
Leung urged the maritime, trade, financial, professional, and educational sectors to work together, leveraging Hong Kong’s strengths and keeping the broader strategic goals in view. He expressed his hope that Hong Kong could integrate its capabilities with those of Mainland China to create a unified national maritime ecosystem, while moving towards high value-added activities within the industry.
Leung is optimistic that if Hong Kong can fully capitalize on its potential, the maritime sector’s opportunities will be limitless.
According to latest Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Centre Development Index (ISCDI) Report, Hong Kong has maintained its position as one of the top six shipping centres in the world along with Dubai, and Rotterdam, owing to their continued role in providing key maritime services, industry-leading port infrastructure and adhering to global environmental regulations.
The report mentions that Hong Kong is exploring visionary infrastructure projects to solidify its position as a leading maritime centre. By focusing on high-end services, sustainable practices, and digital innovation, Hong Kong is set to lead the way in maritime excellence.
