Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has ordered eleven 22,000-TEU container ships from South Korean Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).
A company’s spokesman was quoted as saying that this new order is going to replace a significant part of MSC’s 13,000 and 14,000 fleet in the years to come.
The news comes exactly after French container ship giant CMA CGM confirmed orders for nine 22,000-TEUs container ships at two Chinese shipyards, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, both part of the Chinese state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
The 22,000 TEU container ships are expected to be the largest in the market, surpassing the currently largest boxship of 21,413 TEUs.
