Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest shipping company, has reportedly added over 400 second-hand boxships to its fleet in the last four years.
Recent acquisitions, including the Northern Jaguar, Hongkong Bridge, BF Tiger, Najade, Hannah, Lucie, Margarete Schulte, and Ludwig Schilte, have increased the company’s total second-hand purchases to 402 vessels since August 2020, according to shipping intelligence service Alphaliner.
These additions, acquired in the past ten days, account for a total of 1.66 million TEU, with an average age of 20 years.
Furthermore, the company has surpassed A.P. Møller – Mærsk to become the world’s largest container line at the beginning of 2022 and now operates a fleet with a capacity of 6.2 million TEU.
To remind, earlier this year, analysts at Alphaliner had projected that by early 2025, MSC’s market share will rival the combined share of Mærsk and Hapag-Lloyd, even as these companies will launch the Gemini Cooperation alliance in February 2025.
