MOL claims that it will carry out shipping’s first hydrogen-fuelled engine on an in-service bulk carrier.
Namely, MOL is working with Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) to develop a low-speed, two-stroke hydrogen-fuelled marine engine on one of its geared bulk carriers.
J-ENG will develop the engine with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Yanmar Power Technology, after having received a government research subsidy.
Currently, no timeframe has been given for the trial, which will be watched by shipowners and yards around the world, as hydrogen is considered the new up and coming fuel for shipping’s decarbonization.
What is more, MOL aims to deploy net zero emissions ocean-going vessels in the 2020s and achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050.
