Following the coronavirus outbreak, and the rejection of the “MSC Meraviglia” ship to dock at two major ports around Caribbean waters, as a crewmember was reported with flu symptoms, the cruise company informed that the vessel has been given “a clean bill of health” by Mexican health authorities.
Several days ago, the vessel was not allowed to enter in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, while the passengers couldn’t disembark at either island because local authorities had decided to ignore the health protocols.
As a result the ship altered its direction to Cozumel, Mexico which was its next scheduled port call.
With MSC Meraviglia’s arrival at the port, health authorities conducted several medical checks, while tested a crewmember and a young female passenger who both had common seasonal flu symptoms.
The Mexican authorities followed the correct maritime protocols whereby a ship in advance provides medical records of any passenger or crew member who is or has been unwell to the next port it visits.
…said Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman, MSC Cruises.
In fact, the results were taken and examined at a Mexican Ministry of Public Health laboratory in the city of Chetumal where it was discovered that none of them had been infected by the coronavirus.
Overall, in light of the coronavirus situation, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has recently ordered the investigation of Panama-flagged cargo vessel ‘MV Harmony 6’, after its captain allegedly declared false information of its port clearance details amid intensified maritime security measures against the coronavirus.
