The Libya Coast Guard informed that it has opened fire on a tanker, suspected of smuggling Libyan fuel, after disobeying orders to stop, on Friday.
The Coast Guard fired at the ship with 30mm ammunition, after the Comoros flagged vessel allegedly refused to obey instructions ordered by the Coast Guard, while underway in the area of Bukhamash, west of Zuwarah.
The firing caused significant damage to the ship’s fuel tanks and engine compartment, local media report.
Libya has suffered smuggling incidents several times in the past, as the country’s fuel prices are among the lowest in the world and offers prospects of big profits.
