The final turbine was installed on Saturday at Vattenfall’s European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), off the east coast of Scotland, which is believed to be the country’s largest offshore wind test and demonstration facility.
EOWDC will be able to produce more than 70% of Aberdeen’s domestic electricity demand and annually displace 134,128 tonnes of CO2. According to Vattenfall, the EOWDC is the first offshore wind project to deploy the foundations at commercial scale and to pair them with the world’s most powerful turbines.
This comes just nine weeks, since the first foundation for the 11-turbine EOWDC scheme in Aberdeen Bay on 9 April. The 1,800 ton suction bucket jacket foundation was installed in less than three hours from the time the installation vessel entered the site.
MHI Vestas has designed the V164-8.4 MW and V164-8.8 MW turbines which have a tip height of 191 metres. Each blade is 80m long and the 164m rotor has a circumference larger than that of the London Eye’s.
