A series of beach and underwater clean-ups
HELMEPA’s “Month of Positive Action for the Marine Environment” begins on 21September with a beach clean-up as a part of International Coastal Cleanup 2013 (ICC 2013).
The clean-up has been organized by HELMEPA in collaboration with the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation (HE.R.R.Co.) and will feature the participation of students from schools and will begin with the coastal cleanup along the shores of the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Neo Faliro, on 21st September.
Within the framework of the European research program, PERSEUS, and in collaboration with scientists from the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, a special European Environment Service’s application, “Marine Litter Watch”, will be pilot-tested and used for the first time in Greece at the clean-up.This will allow users to record litter items collected on their mobile phones.
A series of beach and underwater clean-ups and various other environmental activities are scheduled to take place up until and including 21October as part of this special“Month” in a list of places in Greece.
These areas may be viewed on the Campaign’s web-map at the following linkhttp://www.oceanconservancy.org/our-work/international-coastal-cleanup/sign-up-to-clean-up.html while regular updates will also be posted on HELMEPA’sFacebookpage.
HELMEPA is the joint initiative of Greek seafarers and shipowners who declared in 1982 in Piraeus that they voluntarily undertake the responsibility to eliminate ship-generated marine pollution and enhance safety at sea.
