E-learning helps MARPOL understanding
The American Club has released two new modules in its series of web-based e-learning aids designed to familiarise seafarers with the six annexes to the MARPOL Convention.
The new modules, for Annex IV and Annex V on garbage and sewage, respectively, are available to all club members with owned vessels entered for P&I cover.
The first module for Annex I (oil pollution) was launched in May this year. These e-learning aids are specifically designed to be user friendly for seafarers, and are focused on the practical application of the MARPOL Convention on board ship.
Dr William H. Moore, senior vice president of managers Shipowners Claims Bureau Inc., New York, said today: “Shipowners, managers and fleet and marine superintendents are increasingly having to comply with new, stringent regulations, and protection of the marine environment is perhaps the most compelling motivation driving the clean seas campaign under MARPOL 73/78. One has only to think about the Deepwater Horizon disaster to appreciate the current immediacy attached to this subject particularly in the United States.
“The American Club, like other mutuals, has a duty to help its members as much as possible to train crews and make all seafarers aware of their obligations to their employers, and to society.”
