CROWN SEAWAYS has recently made her hull available for testing a new type of vehicle – an unusual looking machine, that can ensure optimum cleaning of a ships hull, without damaging the bottom paint and most importantly not requiring a period in dry dock.
The machine has been developed by Kapacitet A/S and it is able to clean the entire hull below the water line when the ship is in port.
Hull cleaning and fuel reduction
A major cost of operating a ship is the cost of fuel and a reduction in fuel consumption will therefore help reduce our operating costs. Since a large percentage of a ship’s propulsive energy is required to overcome friction, keeping the hull’ surface smooth is important.
A smooth hull will improve the speed of a ship and increase the distance covered, compared to a hull that has not been cleaned, where algae can easily cause increased fiction. So regular cleaning of a ship’s hull is important.
