Construction works on Tema Port expansion project has begun. The project, which is the biggest investment of the almost 70yrs history of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is expected to increase the capacity of the port of Tema to three times its current size.
The project which is expected to be completed by the 4th quarter of 2019 is being executed by the Meridian Port Services (MPS), which is a consortium of three main institutions, Bolore Africa Logistics, APM Terminal and GPHA.
Meridian Port Services (MPS) subsequently awarded the contract for the construction of the project to the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) ltd. and AECOM professional services (Ghana) ltd for the physical construction of the expansion project.
In September, the IFC announced the availability of money allocated for the 1st phase of the project. Subsequently, the CEO of MPS Mohamed Samara assured Eye on Port that the Tema Port Expansion will commence in the first week of October.
Indeed Eye on Port lenses have been wide opened around the site allocated for the expansion and can confidently confirm that the much talked about gigantic expansion of the Tema Port commenced in the first week of October this year 2016.
The Tema Port Expansion project is expected to create substantial amount of jobs for Ghanaians. The project will allow Tema port to accommodate some of the world’s largest container ships, and improve cargo handling services and capacity IN Ghana.
