The Canadian Seafarers’ Training Institute, in partnership with Seafarers’ International Union of Canada, Algoma Central Corporation, Groupe Desgagnés, and Canada Steamship Lines, have launched of a national recruitment initiative, aiming to cover the gap in seafarer employment in the national maritime industry over the coming years.
Canada’s marine economy is growing, and more demand for seafarers means a long and stable career. The Canadian commercial shipping contributes about $3 billion to GDP, and the national industry has an immediate need to absorb 300 new seafarers.
As informed, Canadian seafarers can earn more than $60,000 per year right out of high school, and their education – including skills-based training, and room and board – is paid for by the Seafarers Training Institute.
