Abhijith Balakrishnan

After 17 years at sea, culminating in commanding VLCCs, Abhijith transitioned ashore to explore diverse roles in maritime education and training, Lloyd’s agency, and ship management. During his time as an audit manager, he observed the ongoing tension between compliance demands and the frustration seafarers faced with excessive record-keeping. This sparked a desire to find a balance between operational efficiency and regulatory adherence.
His interest in Human Factors and Systems Safety deepened over time, leading him to pursue a Master’s in Human Factors and Systems Safety at Lund University, Sweden. In 2024, he successfully completed the program with the publication of his thesis: https://lup.lub.lu.se/student-papers/search/publication/9150167.
Abhijith is passionate about integrating Human Factors and Systems Safety principles into the maritime industry. He has shared his insights at prestigious platforms, including the ASSP India Chapter Conference, IIT Madras, and the IMHFS Conference at IMO, London.
