The World Shipping Council (WSC) stated that the new designated European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, has been given a pivotal role in securing supply chains and decarbonizing the shipping sector.
On its statement the World Shipping Council highlight that Tzitzikostas’ priorities should include protecting maritime supply chains from illegal trafficking and geopolitical threats.
Furthermore, integrating renewable energy into the transportation system, streamlining customs and administrative processes, and fostering effective public-private partnerships are also priorities that are underlined.
The WSC will collaborate with the new Commissioner on initiatives that enhance the security of European supply chains and the resilience of the shipping sector, ultimately strengthening EU competitiveness.
We are confident that Commissioner-designate Tzitzikostas will be instrumental in coordinating transportation, energy, and industry policies to promote sustainable shipping. We value our good working relationship with DG MOVE and look forward to partnering with the new Commissioner to advance our shared objectives for the benefit of the industry and the broader EU economy.
…said Joe Kramek, President and CEO, WSC.
Apostolos Tzitzikostas said he would support the production and affordability of green fuels for shipping, again through the new Sustainable transport Investment Plan, the scope of which would be addressed later.
However, T&E has stated that while it is good that Mr Tzitzikostas stressed the role of ports as energy hubs for the energy transition, his remarks were short on the substance and specific measures that need to be proposed soon.
