On 12 June, the World Maritime University (WMU) and the Vietnam Maritime University (VMU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing international cooperation in maritime education and research.
Signed by Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, President, WMU and Dr. Pham Xuan Duong, President, VMU, the agreement sets the foundation for academic and scientific collaboration between the two institutions.
Furthermore, the MoU outlines several key areas of cooperation, including the exchange of students, faculty and staff as well as collaboration on research projects and activities; mutual invitations to seminars, symposia and other scholarly events; and broader academic collaboration as mutually agreed by both institutions.
The MoU represents the commitment of WMU and VMU to cultivating the next generation of maritime leaders and fostering sustainable, knowledge-driven growth in the maritime industry.

In an exclusive interview to SAFETY4SEA, Dr. Momoko Kitada, Professor and Head of Maritime Education & Training at the World Maritime University (WMU), emphasized the need for a shift from quantity to quality to attract and retain the future maritime workforce. Dr. Kitada highlighted that the maritime industry’s challenges will increase the need for adaptability and leadership skills.
As stated, Vietnam is an important maritime nation due to its geographic location, economic structure and strategic maritime interests and is committed to investment in education and sustainability. To date, Vietnam ranks among the top six countries with the highest number of WMU graduates, totaling 146 alumni.
The signing took place during an official visit by a Vietnamese delegation to Sweden and was witnessed by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh of Vietnam and Benjamin Dousa, Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of Sweden.
