Last week TMA Logistics did a test on container barge using wind propulsion. Using eConowind, the Ms Royaal has collapsible sails that can be sailed partly on wind.
The container takes up little space and can be easily be placed on board inland vessels.
Due to constant wind on the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea, between Harlingen and Amsterdam, the location was ideal for testing the technology. The test yielded a fuel saving of 10%.
By using inland navigation, waiting times with trucks are avoided. It also reduces traffic jams and CO2 emissions. TMA logistics now wants to make their ships even greener. For this reason, they will make more use of the wind, such as the eCono wind. TMA has also been using a fully hybrid ship since 2018.
