WWF is working with the Sustainable Shipping Initiative on sustainability ratings schemes
WWF has recently published a new study on accident at sea. The study is looking at the collective dataassociated with shipping accidents in detail. It presents consolidated evidence offactors that have contributed to, or been associated with, shipping accidents over thelast 15 years.
Apart from this study, WWF is working with the shipping industry and encouraging improvements, initiallyfocusing on encouraging states to become party to relevant international conventionsand regulations so that these can be universally implemented and so apply to allvessels at sea, thus delivering a level playing field and improving standards – to thebenefit of responsible operators
WWF is highlighting impacts of shipping on sensitive areas such as the Great BarrierReef and outlining specific ways to reduce risks in sensitive areas. In particular, in the hotspot areas highlighted in the study, WWF is working on cooperationbetween all marine stakeholders so that the planning of coastal developments and theconduct of maritime activities can be made more sustainable.
More specifically, on shipping, WWF is reinforcing the importance of ensuring thatvessels are built, maintained and operated to a high standard so as to lower the riskof accidents.
Also, WWF is working with the Sustainable Shipping Initiative on sustainabilityratings schemes so that good performance may be incentivised and so drivecontinual improvement.
