MV Wisdom pose no immediate environmental threat
The analysis of water samples collected on June 28 morning from Juhu Beach does not show any presence of oil or fuel according to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).
Some negligible traces of oil were found possibly coming from the oil rigs in the high sea during high tide. Though the “Wisdom” was carrying four tonnes of oil, the MPCB has got no alerts of a leak from the Directorate General of Shipping or the Coast Guard.
They will continue collecting samples and keep a watch. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on June 28 started a mass scale clean-up operation on the shore. There are huge lumps of sand and oil. Over 30 civic workers were put on the task of making the beach oil-free.
Meanwhile there are doubts regarding the next salvage attempt as the tug’s engine problem has not yet been sorted out.
The two attempts to move the vessel on June 17 and 18, had failed. While on June 17 the operation was stalled after a rope broke, on June 18 it was called off after the lead tug developed engine trouble.SMIT Salvage is conducting the operation.
