The Turkish cargo ship Efe Murat, ran aground on a breakwater off Bari, Italy, continued listing since the incident on February 23. Up to now, there are no reports for water pollution. Yet, there’s a possibility that the 37 tonnes of oil aboard the vessel cold easily lead to fatal environmental results.
Concerning the environmental threats, authorities agreed to extract the oil from the 5,800 dwt vessel, an operation which is scheduled to start on February 28.
In addition, the extraction of the oil would be conducted by using a mini oil pipeline.
Weather conditions at the site are slowing down the salvage operation.
Italian coast guard flying over the area of the incident to monitor the vessel and the situation.
Efe Murat, is crewed by 15 sailors and a Master, all with Turkish nationality, was also conducted, reportedly with signs of hull rupture.
A Dutch salvage company was hired to carry out the vessel removal and fuel extraction.
The incident occurred when the vessel lost control, 200 metres off the coast of Bari, due to wind and rough sea conditions.
