The Ocean Cleanup organisation is developing advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. After being successfully tested, it moved to Great Pacific Garbage Patch and started cleaning plastics. Although, Ocean Cleanup faced challenges, as the plastic is exiting the system once it is collected, the Foundation is working on causes and solutions to remedy this.
In cleaning the oceans and liming plastic debris, Maersk collaborated with the Ocean Cleanup, by installing a pilot clean-up system in the Pacific. This was the world’s first major initiative for collection of plastic from the ocean and it was launched on September 8, 2018.
Maersk Supply Service also monitored the Cleanup System 001, in a campaign lasting for sixty days.
In this video, the Ocean Cleanup Organisation, reveals how its technology works.
The initial idea was to create a coast line where the garbage would gather and be taken out.
Also, according to the explanatory video the system takes advantage of three natural oceanic forces:
- Winds;
- Waves;
- Currents.
Concluding, the system automatically goes to the area with the highest plastic concentration and also gathers performance data, as a support vessel comes by to take the plastic, transport it to land and recycle it.
