In light of the Oceans Day celebrated in the shipping industry, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) published a video on a success story in sea life recovery in Costa Rica. A fishing community in Tárcoles, on the country’s Pacific Coast, decided to act and protect their livelihoods by setting up a marine conservation area.
Mainly, David Chacon, Coope Tárcoles, noted that fishing indiscriminately, and conserving fish when you’re hungry aren’t two compatible things. Thus, Costa Rica’s fishing community decided to act aiming to create a responsible fishing area to preserve oceans and also be able to fish and make an income.
The WTO highlighted that
It is everybody’s job to ensure the wellbeing of marine life.
The fishing community established limits as to fishing at different times, allowing the sea to recover.
Mr Chacon reported that from December to February, the fishing activities focus on jumbo shrimp; Then, fishing of sea bass follows; In October, November, December the community stops fishing grouper and snapper and turn their efforts towards mahi-mahi.
We rotate the catch. The moment we diversify species, we are also supporting conservation
… Mr Chacon added.
The UN Sustainable Goal 14 refers to sustainable use of the oceans, improving safety and security of international shipping and preventing pollution from ships.
