A large crane collapsed onto one of the world’s largest cruises in a floating dry dock at the Grand Bahama Shipyard on April 1, resulting in injuries to some personnel and damage. The cruise ship ‘Oasis of the Seas’ has suffered an unspecified casualty, a major repair and refit facility for the Caribbean cruise industry.
Specifically, according to local media, Royal Caribbean’s 225,000-tonne Oasis of the Seas was in the shipyard’s Dry Dock No. 2 when the accident took place, which resulted to at least one large crane toppling on top of the vessel.
“The ship collapsed, dock collapsed, crane collapsed”, as reported by the Grand Bahamas Tribune reported.
In the meantime, Royal Caribbean commented on the incident, stating that the shipyard referred to eight injuries in relation to the accident, yet none of the injuries are fatal.
At 1.200 feet long and 6.300 passengers at full occupancy, the 2009-built Oasis of the Seas is one of the largest cruise ships in the world.
She is scheduled for a series of cruise itineraries in Europe this summer, followed by a major scheduled drydocking for a “bow-to-stern revitalization.”
Concluding, she will return to her home port in Miami for fall and winter 2019.
