Turkey was hit by a massive earthquake, which killed at least 4,000 people, while several ports were affected and are still out of action.
More specifically, Iskenderun, a major port on the Mediterranean, suffered structural damage, in addition to a severe blaze.
Namely, due to the earthquake, a fire erupted in the middle of a container yard, which spread fast, and box stacks collapsed across the port.
Additionally, operations at Mersin International Port have also been suspended while inspections take place.
What is more, pipeline oil flows through the Turkish port of Ceyhan were temporarily suspended as inspections started to check the state of the pipelines.
The earthquake was registered as 7.8, classified as “major” on the official magnitude scale. It broke along about 100km (62 miles) of fault line, causing serious damage to buildings near the fault.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, and the number of people killed, injured and displaced probably will climb.
The initial quake was followed by dozens of powerful aftershocks, including one recorded at 7.5 magnitude in the same fault zone of south-central Turkey. Most of the damage is in southern Turkey and northern and central Syria.
