The American Waterways Operators has produced a video highlighting the tugboat, towboat and barge industry’s commitment to safety and its record as the safest mode of freight transportation.
The video, The Tugboat, Towboat and Barge Industry: Delivering Safety on America’s Waterways, explains that the industry, while moving nearly 700 million tons of cargo each year, prioritizes the safety of mariners, communities, and the environment – all while boasting the lowest injury and fatality rate among major modes of freight transportation.
The video also highlights that studies shows that injury and fatality rates tied to moving freight on the waterways are much lower than when it’s moved by rail or truck. Towing vessels across America need a Coast Guard issued inspection certificate to operate but when it comes to safety they run on a culture of constant improvement always striving to learn, lead an make what they do even safer.
For decades, AWO members have demonstrated their commitment to safety leadership – integrating it into their individual safety cultures, leading industry-wide initiatives and partnering with government and private sector stakeholders to safeguard human life and protect the marine environment.
