The long awaited IMO’s 2020 sulphur cap regulation finally came into force in January 1st 2020, aiming to crucially reduce shipping emissions, bringing significant benefits to both human health and the environment.
According to the video, in certain controled areas the limitation on Sulphur emissions has already been implemented to 0.1%, such as in port of Cannes and Iceland.
The new limitation aims to a 77% drop in SOx emissions coming from vessels which is equal to 8.5 million tonnes annually.
Moreover, the 2020 sulphur cap will play a crucial role in human health, by reducing:
- Stroke
- Asthma
- cardiovascular disease
- lung cancer
- pulmonary disease
Also, cutting sulphur emissions helps prevent acid rain, which means:
- less harm to crops, forests and aquatic species
- tackling ocean acidification.
