The International Maritime Organization fully supports global efforts to protect biodiversity in the world’s oceans, and therefore launched a video concerning the protection of marine biodiversity and ecosystems.
The IMO along with key shipping stakeholders are making great efforts to protect the marine environment and boost sustainability.
In the meantime, the IMO conventions and guidelines on the management of ships’ ballast water, biofouling and anti-fouling systems help prevent the transfer of aquatic organisms to new environments via shipping.
Also, IMO treaties play their own part in limiting the dumping of waste at sea, mitigating marine pollution and limiting impacts on biodiversity. The London Convention and London Protocol ban disposal of wastes at sea except in very specific cases. They also prohibit the dumping of radioactive and industrial waste.

To this day, 15 areas have been designated as PSSAs, including the Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Islands.
