CHIRP Maritime has produced a video, aiming to provide additional information, regarding the use of personal mobile devices whilst on duty.
As CHIRP says, using personal mobile devices such as mobile phones and MP4 players whilst on duty can lead to serious safety issues.
Two main things operators must keep in mind is that no matter how comfortable and confident they feel in a situation, it doesn’t mean that this is right.
For example, someone might feel as if they can monitor the screens in front of them, and the mobile phone at the same time, feeling that they’ve done it before and got away with it.
However, science has proven that no one can every time switch from one event to another, without leaving some part of their attention behind.
You can never be a hundred percent on task when you’re switching between one thing and another
Another thing to consider, is the number of items of information that are coming from those channels. As a matter of fact, everyone has limits to what we can remember.
While the maximum number of events we can remember is about four at a time, when under stress and when events are happening, the brain’s capacity for memory can go down to one event at a time.
However confident you feel it isn’t the case that your brain shares that confidence that you feel
