The Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier Wakashio ran aground on the coral reef on Pointe d’esny off Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, on Saturday evening. The vessel was heading from China to Brazil when the accident happened.
Reports say the captain was sailing too close to shore, but further information are yet to be confirmed.
The National Emergency Operations Command is monitoring and coordinating response activities of the Police, Special Mobile Force and National Coast Guard.
Operations are taking place under the supervision of Dr the Hon Anwar Husnoo, Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management; Commissioner of Police, Mr Khemraj Servansing and Officer-in-charge of the NDRRMC, Acting Commanding Officer SMF, Mr Anil Kumar Dip.
