A fire broke out on a 7,056 dwt tanker, Sheng You 229, in the Gulf of Tonkin on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Beijing time, resulting in two crewmates presumed dead.
According to international news sources, the ship’s cargo tanks caught fire, and the fire swiftly spread to the rest of the ship. Rescue ships and coast guard personnel were quickly dispatched by the Qinzhou Maritime Administration.
According to reports, the fire was likely started by an explosion. 15 of the 17 crew members were rescued, leaving the other two are missing, presumed dead with search and rescue efforts still ongoing.
