A malfunction in the fumigation hatch caused an explosion onboard the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier ‘Minoan Glory’ while anchored off Vancouver, in the early afternoon hours of 6 August. There was a lot of sound and fury, but there were no injuries and it was nothing to be too concerned about, the Canadian Coast Guard informed.
Just before 5 p.m., people on Ambleside Beach in West Vancouver heard a very loud noise and saw thick smoke spreading off from the cargo ship, according to local media.
Witnesses mentioned the loud was similar to a car crash.
Upon arrival on the scene, the Canadian coast guard determined the explosion and smoke was caused by a malfunction with the ship’s fumigation hatch.
There were no injuries or marine pollution and the ship continued on to its next destination, Singapore.
The Minoan Glory had arrived in Vancouver on 2 August.
