The brand-new cruise ship MSC Grandiosa collided with a pier in Palermo, Sicily, during docking on Monday, December 30, morning. The port quarter sustained light damage above the waterline but was repaired the same day. A video emerged shows the MSC Grandiosa backing down and swinging the stern to starboard.
The 6,300-passenger cruise ship, which made its maiden voyage in November, approached a projecting pier edge and nearly cleared it; yet the stern swung too slowly and clipped the corner of the dock, damaging the concrete.
Thereafter, the MSC Grandiosa managed to dock without any further incident. According to sources, the vessel’s operational readiness and itinerary remain unchanged, while the reasons of the contact still remain unknown and an investigation is ongoing.

‘MSC Grandiosa’ is the most environmentally advanced cruise ship yet. On the occasion for its coming into service in November, MSC Cruises announced its commitment to become the world’s first fully carbon neutral major global cruise line.
In particular, MSC Cruises aims to develop a carbon offset portfolio that includes projects which protect and restore ocean and coastal habitats while also absorbing more CO2 than currently occurs. As Blue Carbon projects focused mainly on coastal habitats are currently scarce, MSC Cruises will support the development of what aims to become the first carbon credits to be generated from the earth’s vast ocean, thus establishing new means for protecting and enhancing marine biodiversity and support communities that depend on the highly pressurized resources of the sea.
