The container ship Mentari Cystal capsized with its starboard resting on bottom along pier at Teluk Lamong Terminal, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, on November 15, 2020.
The cargo ship was planned to be on berth for around eight hours for cargo operations. It was carrying 137 containers, when not long before its scheduled departure, the ship rolled over sinking alongside the pier.
According to sources, the ship’s 18 crew are safe and helped with the recovery operation. An uknown number of containers fell into the harbor with some spotted floating as a danger to navigation.
The port deployed an oil containment boom around the vessel, while a recovery operation took place to retrieve the lost containers.
In addition, several other ships in the area were moved to alternate berths.
Port operations are continuing smoothly, and an investigation has been launched to find the causes of the accident.
