The French shipping company, CMA CGM, launched world’s largest LNG-powered containership, Jacques Saadé, which is the first of nine 23,000 TEU French-flagged LNG-powered containerships that are planned to be constructed in the future.
The Jacques Saadé takes its name after the founder of the company and comes into existence almost two years after Saadé’s decision to select LNG as a fuel for nine ultra large containerships.

The launch of the first 23 TEU ships using liquefied natural gas showcases the energy transformation that can be achieved if there is sufficient collaboration by all members in the industry. In line with the company’s sustainability goals, CMA CGM was the first company in 2019, on a global scale, to successfully trial a biofuel oil onboard one of its container ships. Also, according to the company’s 2018 CSR Report the Group achieved a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions per container transported per kilometer between 2005 and 2015.
